Proposal of a cohesive zone model suitable for the study of bonded joints.

Abstract

The adhesive thickness has a strong influence on the crack initiation in a bonded assembly. Indeed, the thiner the adhesive thickness, the higher the strength. In order to describe this influence, several cohesive zone models (bilinear, tri-linear and trapezoidal) are used, using a linear elastic stiffness defined as the ratio between the Young's modulus (or the Shear modulus) and the adhesive thickness. The influence of (i) the mesh size, (ii) the shape of the cohesive zone model and (iii) the interfacial stiffness on the crack initiation is studied. The results are discussed in order to conclude about the capabilities of cohesive zone models to predict the crack initiation in a bonded assembly.
